Why the desktop app matters

Every way of using Drive encrypts your files on your device. The difference is how much you have to trust us:

• The web app is delivered by our server as JavaScript on every visit. A malicious or coerced server could serve a modified version that steals your passphrase. You trust us, and our hosting, every time you load the page.
• The desktop app is code you install once. It does not change silently between sessions, which is why it is the trust anchor of the system — the client we point to when the stakes are high.

Both clients share the same Rust cryptography core, so your data is interchangeable between them.

In the meantime

The web app is available today. Use it with the caveat above in mind, and switch to the desktop app when it ships.
